Pokémon Myths, Busted with Love
For every mom, grandma, teacher, and neighbor who ever side-eyed a Charizard — this one’s for you. No lectures, no eye-rolls. Just the facts, and a little fun. Tap a card to flip it.
Myth “Pokémon” means pocket demons . tap to flip
Fact It’s short for Pocket Monsters — from the Japanese Poketto Monsutā , built from the English words pocket + monster . And “monster” here means creature — like the bugs a kid collects in jars. Which is literally where the whole idea came from.
Myth The cards teach witchcraft and the occult. tap to flip
Fact Nobody casts anything. “Psychic” is a game category, like Fire or Water. “Evolution” just means your creature grows stronger between rounds — a game mechanic, not a philosophy. You win with arithmetic, not incantations.
Myth The symbols on the cards are satanic . tap to flip
Fact Every symbol on a card is a game piece with its meaning printed in a public rulebook — energy types, rarity marks, set icons. Nothing hidden, nothing coded. If it were secret, it wouldn’t be printed on cardboard sold to eight-year-olds.
Myth It fills kids’ heads with darkness . tap to flip
Fact In April 2000, a Vatican-run television station reviewed the Pokémon games and cards and called them “full of inventive imagination,” with no “harmful moral side effects” — celebrating, in their words, “ties of intense friendship.” Even the Vatican said: it’s fine.
Myth It was designed to corrupt kids. tap to flip
Fact It was designed by Satoshi Tajiri — a boy who spent his childhood hunting beetles in the woods outside Tokyo (friends called him “Dr. Bug”). As the woods were paved over, he built a game to bottle that joy: catching, collecting, and trading with friends. The whole franchise is a love letter to childhood curiosity.
