Moltres — The Flame Pokémon

Moltres official artwork

Moltres is a Fire and Flying-type Legendary Pokémon from the Kanto region, one of the original 151 Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Red and Blue. Known as the Flame Pokémon, it stands 2 meters tall, and legend says that when it flaps its burning wings, even the night sky glows red.

Moltres is one of the legendary birds of Kanto, alongside Articuno and Zapdos — a trio that has been iconic since the very first generation of games. In the original Red and Blue, it waited at the end of Victory Road, a final legendary trial before the Pokémon League. The Pokédex says: 'If this Pokémon is injured, it is said to dip its body in the molten magma of a volcano to burn and heal itself.'

The legendary birds took center stage in the second Pokémon movie, The Power of One, where a collector's attempt to capture Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres throws the world's climate into chaos — and only Lugia can restore the balance. It remains one of the most beloved stories in the franchise.

Generations later, Moltres returned in a striking new Galarian form in Pokémon Sword and Shield, reimagined as a Dark and Flying-type with a burning, sinister aura — proof of how enduring the original design remains nearly thirty years on.
