Trades happened face-to-face, cable stretched across the cafeteria table. Evolving Kadabra meant trusting someone with your best Pokémon — and getting it back.
The link cable was social engineering disguised as hardware. Version exclusives forced you to find someone with the other game. Trade evolutions — Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter — required genuine trust: you handed over your strongest Pokémon and prayed they'd trade back. Playground economies ran on this. "I'll trade you my Kadabra if you trade it right back" was a binding contract.
